Dubai

Major Documented by 2014

Dubai is the principal centre of contemporary Jewish communal life in the United Arab Emirates. A small expatriate Jewish population developed as Dubai became an international business centre. Regular organized Jewish prayer was established by 2014, and communal institutions expanded substantially during the late 2010s and following normalization of relations between the UAE and Israel in 2020.

Abu Dhabi

Major Documented by 2020

Abu Dhabi developed a significant contemporary Jewish presence alongside the growth of Jewish communal life in the UAE. The city became particularly important following normalization with Israel in 2020. In 2023 the Abrahamic Family House opened on Saadiyat Island, including the Moses Ben Maimon Synagogue, which provides a permanent public Jewish house of worship in the UAE capital.

Jewish presence reported in the region of modern Ras al-Khaimah

Benjamin of Tudela's twelfth-century account refers to a Jewish community at a place identified with the area of modern Ras al-Khaimah. Later discovery of a tombstone bearing Hebrew inscriptions near Ras al-Khaimah provides additional evidence of a historical Jewish connection with the region, although the precise identification and scale of the medieval community remain uncertain.

Abraham Accords transform public Jewish life in the UAE

The United Arab Emirates and Israel agreed to normalize relations in August 2020 and formally signed the Abraham Accords in Washington on 15 September. Normalization dramatically increased the visibility of Jewish religious and communal life in the UAE and opened direct travel and institutional connections with Israel.

During a visit to the United Arab Emirates, Israel's Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef participated in events with the country's Jewish communities and recognized developing religious institutions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The period marked the transition of Jewish religious life from largely private activity toward openly organized communal institutions.

Moses Ben Maimon Synagogue opens in Abu Dhabi

The Abrahamic Family House opened in Abu Dhabi with the Moses Ben Maimon Synagogue alongside the Imam Al-Tayeb Mosque and St. Francis Church. The synagogue provided a prominent permanent public home for Jewish worship in the UAE capital.
